In the tenant farming system of Lombardy, the absentee landlord who never visited his farm was a figure of contempt and often practical disaster. The mezzadro who managed the farm in the owner's absence did his best but lacked the authority and motivation to maintain everything as the owner would. The proverb therefore had both practical and moral dimensions: a good landowner visited his property, knew his workers, understood the condition of his land. In the mercantile tradition of Milan, the same logic applied to the warehouse, the workshop, the counting house: the business that the owner never visited was the business that was being slowly robbed. In contemporary usage it applies to property management, remote work, and family life.
