Qué significa

Compostaggio di comunità (community composting) is an officially recognised waste management practice under Italian law (D.Lgs. 116/2020). A group of residents manages a shared compost unit in a courtyard, park, or communal space. It diverts organic waste from collection and produces free compost for local gardens.

— What is that large green box in the building courtyard? — It's our building compost bin. We put food scraps in it. — Can everyone use it? — Yes, just come to the meeting next month to learn what you can put in it.

Nota cultural

Milan operates one of Italy's largest urban community composting networks, with over 300 authorised community compost units across the city. The initiative is coordinated by AMSA (Milan's waste management company) and reduces pressure on organic waste collection, especially in the dense historic centre.
