Phone boxes ('cabine telefoniche') have virtually disappeared from Italy. Telecom Italia (now TIM) removed most by 2020. Premium-rate numbers in Italy are identified by prefixes like 199, 895, 899 — calling these from mobile phones is expensive. Consumer organisations ('Altroconsumo') advise Italians to always check tariffs before calling unfamiliar number prefixes.
