'Posso pagare con' (can I pay with) + payment method is the standard Italian payment inquiry. 'Carta di credito' (credit card) and 'carta di debito' (debit card) are both common. Italy has largely moved to card payments, but always carry some cash as a backup.

Small bars may still require €10+ for card payments
Italy has significantly improved card payment acceptance in recent years. Since 2021, merchants are legally required to accept card payments for any amount. However, small cash-only establishments still exist. Airport shops and services are reliably card-friendly. Inform your bank before travelling abroad.
